Tips & Tricks in computers  

 

    Alt Key

     

    Alternate Key - Located on either side of the Spacebar.

    Arrow (Cursor) Keys

     

    Used to move the cursor around on the screen.

    Ctrl Key

     

    Control Key - Found at the bottom left and right of the main body of keys.

    F Keys

     

    Function Keys - Most are preprogrammed, some can be user programmed for common shortcuts.

    Menu Key

     

    Located below the right Shift key, this is the same as Right-Clicking with the mouse.

    Numeric Keypad

     

    Used for typing in numbers quicker or with the Num Lock key off doubles as Arrow Keys.

    Page Keys

     

    Insert, Home, Page Up, Delete, End, Page Down  Also found on the Numeric Keypad when Num Lock is off.

    Windows Key

     

    Between the Ctrl and Alt keys, this key has many specific functions for Windows.

    Common Program Short-Cut Keys:

    [+]  This is used when keys are to be pressed simultaneously.
    [-]   This is used when keys are to be pressed in succession.

    Copy

    Ctrl+C

    Copies the currently highlighted item.

    Cut

    Ctrl+X

    Removes the currently highlighted item to be Pasted elsewhere.

    Paste

    Ctrl+V

    Pastes the Copied or Cut item to where the cursor is located.

    Print

    Ctrl+P

    Prints the current document, page, image, etc. A few programs will print highlighted items.

    Select All

    Ctrl+A

    Selects all the text on the current page or document.

    Undo

    Ctrl+Z

    Undoes the last command performed.

    New File

    Ctrl+N

    Creates a new file.

    Open File

    Ctrl+O

    Opens an existing file.

    Save

    Ctrl+S

    Saves current file.

    Help!

    F1

    Brings up the Help file for the currently open program.

     

     Windows Short-Cut Keys:

    Alt+F4

    Closes the current program or window.

    Ctrl+F4

    Closes the current document or window inside the current program. (Not universal)

    Alt+Tab

    Used for quick switching between programs or applications.

    Alt+ESC

    Used for quick switching between system windows, error messages or question windows.

    Window

    Opens up the Start Menu.

    Ctrl+ESC

    Opens up the Start Menu.

    Menu

    Opens a Context Menu, same as Right-Clicking with the mouse.

    Alt+F10

    Opens a Context Menu, same as Right-Clicking with the mouse.

    Ctrl+Alt+Delete

    Press Once - Brings up the Close Program window.
    Press Twice - Reboots the computer.

    Alt-Space-n

    Minimizes current program to Task Bar.

    Alt-Space-x

    Maximizes current program to full screen.

    Alt-Space-r

    Restores window to normal size from a maximized window.

    Alt

    Will give access to pull-down menus, use arrow keys to navigate menus.

    Ctrl+a

    Selects all in the current window.

    Ctrl+w

    Closes active window.

    Ctrl+f

    Opens Find program in current program, or Find Files in Windows.

    Ctrl+b

    Opens Organize Favorites in Internet Explorer ver 4.0 and up.

    Windows+d

    Minimizes all open windows. Use also to undo this command.

    Windows+e

    Opens Windows Explorer to browse computer contents.

    Windows+f

    Opens Find File program.

    Windows+m

    Minimizes all open windows.

    Windows+Shift+m

    Undoes Windows+m command.

    Windows+r

    Opens Run window.

    F1

    Help

    F2

    Allows for renaming files, icons or short-cuts to programs.

    F3

    Opens Find File. (at Desktop)

    F5

    Refreshes current window or web page.

    F6

    Moves between panes in a multi-pane window.

    F10

    Allows access to pull down menus. Same as Alt key.

    F11

    In some parts of Windows, removes toolbars for longer viewing area.

    Windows+Pause

    Opens up System Properties window.

    Ctrl+Enter In Internet Explorer. If you type just the web page name. then hold down the Ctrl key. Then press the enter key. Internet Explorer will insert the www and the .com and open the web page.

    Alt+Print Screen

    Captures current screen to clipboard....can then be pasted in to Paint program.
